Colorado Colleges Expand Guaranteed Admission Programs for High School Students

Filing Date Oct 20, 2026 Audience 570 Byline Melanie Asmar

Colorado students can qualify for automatic admission at colleges including CU Denver, CSU and Colorado Mesa, with GPA thresholds varying by school and program.

Colorado Colleges Expand Guaranteed Admission Programs for High School Students

Colorado’s direct admission programs are turning college access into a clearer set of eligibility rules: students at participating schools can secure admission based on grades, and some programs add scholarships. The thresholds vary widely, from a 2.0 GPA for Denver Public Schools students seeking admission to Metropolitan State University of Denver to demanding academic and course requirements for Colorado School of Mines.

For students, the practical change is that applying may no longer be the first hurdle. Direct admission agreements are designed to ease application stress, encourage students to remain in Colorado and make college feel attainable for students from low-income families, according to national experts cited in the source reporting. Admission itself does not cover tuition, though Colorado offers programs and scholarships that can reduce college costs, sometimes to zero.

Eligibility depends on the college and, in many cases, the student’s district. Some offers apply to any Colorado student who meets a GPA threshold; others are limited to graduates of specific districts, schools or charter networks. The list below reflects the programs described in the source and is presented as an evolving record. Chalkbeat Colorado invites readers to share programs missing from its list at [email protected]. Statewide pathways set distinct academic bars

Colorado Mesa University guarantees admission and a scholarship to any Colorado student with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. Students who took CMU courses while concurrently enrolled in high school are also guaranteed admission and don’t need to reapply.

Colorado State University in Fort Collins has a pilot program for fall 2027: any Colorado student with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is guaranteed admission. The university’s announcement describes the program.

At Colorado State University Pueblo, the statewide GPA threshold is 2.3. Any Colorado student meeting it is guaranteed admission.

Colorado School of Mines sets a higher bar and ties admission to preparation in math and science. Students need an unweighted GPA of at least 3.8, or at least 3.6 plus a 1420 SAT score or a 32 ACT composite score. They must also have completed pre-calculus or trigonometry and three years of lab-based science, including chemistry or physics, with no grade below B- in a math or science course. Eligible students receive a $2,000 annual scholarship. Mines lays out the criteria for its Golden Guarantee.

Denver Public Schools has the broadest group of listed options

Denver Public Schools students can qualify for automatic admission at five institutions, with eligibility tied to GPA and, for some programs, the year in which it is measured.

The University of Colorado Denver guarantees admission to DPS students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in either junior or senior year. Colorado State University in Fort Collins sets the same 3.0 minimum, measured in senior year; the program is described in CSU’s announcement.

Two other options use a 2.3 GPA threshold by the end of junior year. Colorado State University Global guarantees admission to its online bachelor’s degree programs for eligible DPS students, according to the partnership announcement. CSU Pueblo also guarantees admission to DPS students meeting that threshold, as outlined in its program announcement.

Metropolitan State University of Denver has the lowest listed GPA cutoff among these DPS options: students with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 are guaranteed admission. The district described the program in a Facebook post.

District agreements extend access across the Front Range

CU Denver guarantees admission to students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in junior or senior year from Jeffco Public Schools, Aurora Public Schools, Littleton Public Schools and St. Vrain Valley Schools. The same GPA and grade-year rule applies to students in the DSST Public Schools charter network and Rocky Mountain Prep. CU Denver’s direct admissions page describes the program.

Jeffco students also have a route to Mines: an unweighted GPA of at least 3.8 and a STEM endorsement on the high school diploma qualify them for guaranteed admission. The district-specific criteria are covered in Chalkbeat Colorado’s reporting. DSST students can qualify for the same Mines pathway with the same GPA and STEM endorsement requirements.

Aurora students have a separate route to Colorado Mesa. A student with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 in junior year is guaranteed admission and a scholarship. Students with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in senior year are guaranteed admission, though the source does not list a scholarship for that threshold.

Harrison School District 2 students can qualify for CSU Pueblo with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.3 by the end of junior year. The district’s direct admissions page provides program details.

Regional programs include community college and Adams State

Greeley-Evans School District 6 students can be automatically admitted to Aims Community College. The college describes the arrangement on its District 6 direct admissions page.

Adams State University offers automatic admission to seniors at 19 schools and districts, most of them in the San Luis Valley. The participating communities and schools are Adams 14, Alamosa, Centennial, Center Consolidated, Creede, Crestone Charter School, Huerfano, La Veta, Moffat Consolidated, Monte Vista, Mountain Valley, North Conejos, Rye High School, Sanford, Sangre de Cristo, Sargent, Sierra Grande, South Conejos and Upper Rio Grande.

At Central High School in Grand Junction, Colorado Mesa guarantees admission and a scholarship to students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and a STEM endorsement on their diploma.

Eligibility is only the first step

The programs share a useful premise: students can see a concrete route to admission before they submit a conventional application. But the details matter. GPA cutoffs differ, some are measured at the end of junior year while others use senior-year records, and several pathways require specific coursework or a STEM endorsement. Students should check the applicable college or district information to confirm which criteria apply to them.

Automatic admission also leaves the cost question open. Some programs include scholarships, including the statewide Colorado Mesa offer and Mines’ $2,000 annual award, while other listed guarantees do not specify scholarship funding. For students weighing their options, the emerging picture is a broader set of entry points into Colorado higher education, with affordability and program fit still requiring a closer look.
