Discover how Helper Studio in MindTap enriches social work education by providing practical skills practice and instant feedback for students.

Ten years ago, amidst the bustle of a social work conference, I found myself intrigued by a Cengage representative's introduction to MindTap. This moment marked a shift in my perspective on integrating technology into education—a decision that's proven invaluable over the years. As the demands on educators continue to escalate, finding effective tools that enable smarter teaching has never been more essential.

Having grown through various challenges in my career, I've witnessed the tangible benefits that technology brings to the educational landscape, particularly through MindTap. Today, my students enjoy these advantages, and it’s evident that each enhancement Cengage introduces fuels my own eagerness to deepen my technological knowledge. Central to my experience with MindTap is a feature that stands out: Helper Studio.

Benefits of MindTap for Social Work Courses

Cengage’s MindTap has streamlined my teaching approach significantly. The platform offers courses specifically tailored for Social Work, which contain a diverse array of exercises crafted to enhance understanding and mastery of the subject matter. From immersive case studies to video resources and quizzes aligned with learning objectives, these components engage students while sharpening vital career skills.

Assignments created within MindTap are fundamental to my teaching strategy, serving as a core component across all courses. Given that social work is an accredited profession with established curriculum standards, it's imperative to meet these criteria while fostering real-world readiness.

My ultimate aim is to prepare students for practical applications rather than just rote learning. MindTap excels in this regard, offering an expansive library of adaptable exercises and activities that I can meticulously align with course expectations and the accrediting body’s EPAS standards.

Helper Studio: My Preferred MindTap Feature

Helper Studio has emerged as my go-to feature within MindTap Courses for Social Work. This tool, powered by Bongo, offers students the chance to engage with real-world scenarios tied to each chapter’s learning objectives. They can interact with a virtual client, practice their responses in key situations, and receive immediate AI-driven feedback on aspects such as clarity, delivery, and pacing. Options for both peer and instructor reviews further enrich the learning experience.

This interactive approach helps me focus on essential competencies and behaviors linked to various learning objectives while providing students the opportunity for both pre- and in-service practice along with critical feedback for their growth.

Applying Helper Studio in My Course

While I've taught interviewing techniques for years, I've recently reevaluated how to use MindTap in my 21st Century Digital Capstone course to solidify comprehension among students. Helper Studio facilitates practice based on the learning objectives outlined in each chapter, allowing students to hone their essential skills before entering the professional environment.

Students must complete specific video exercises in Helper Studio, followed by reflective questions for each vignette and a 5–10-minute video summarizing their practical insights. The process mirrors three key phases of interviewing, each associated with tailored Helper Studio assignments that target the respective learning outcomes.

Student Impact and Engagement

Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive; they appreciate how Helper Studio allows them to internalize the nuances of the interview process through hands-on experience. The AI-based feedback on their recordings has been instrumental in bolstering their understanding of effective interviewing techniques. Additionally, students can explore the ethical dimensions of AI integration in both education and future professional contexts.

Coupled with my enthusiastic teaching approach, Helper Studio has sparked stimulating discussions among students and ignited an excitement in the classroom that had waned in recent times.
